Bridging Indian agriculture and food ecosystems

who we are

India’s first agri-food thinktank

There is transformational potential in connecting seemingly divergent sub-systems of Indian food – livelihood and policy, trade and diplomacy & culinary knowledge.

Policy & Livelihood

Use policy as a tool to deepen consumer-grower engagement and impact grower livelihoods

Food Diplomacy

Utilize food history, culture and heritage to establish people-to-people connect that goes beyond trade.

Culinary Knowledge

Enable new ways of knowledge curation and dissemination to deepen understanding of India’s culinary heritage.

India-Japan Centre on Climate and Culture, Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, in collaboration with the Vrihi Foundation, is pleased to announce the first Culinary Lens Fellowship for young researchers from India with an interest in the food history of the Indian Subcontinent. The fellowship aims to support fresh, innovative work in written, visual, multimedia, and experimental formats.
what we do

A framework for promotion of heritage agriculture

We are creating a national playbook for realising the potential of most unique heritage Indian produce that have higher inherent value and need a strategic approach. We are studying 4 commodity value chains in the first phase.

What’s stopping this forest produce from going mainstream?

Mahua is a critical study from multiple standpoints – from policy around forest produce to discussions around a national GI framework.

An Indian success story. How was the value chain impacted?

From lattes to superfood tags, turmeric did really go global. Many clusters have received GI certifications too. Have the value chains evolved too?

Is there hidden global potential in Indian citruses?

Galgal. Many don’t even know what it is and where it is from. That has been the story for many citruses from the Himalayan region. It needs to change.

Great cultural value. Will the global markets follow?

A non-agricultural produce with heritage value that has seen limited utilization so far. Is there global potential in streamlining this supply chain?
